Palm Sunday with Lemmens' music!

The Palm Sunday of 2015 is coming. Our ensemble, the Warsaw Anglican Voices, together with me, is preparing the musical part of Palm Sunday Liturgy. This year we decided to perform a set of music composed by excellent Belgian composer, Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881), who also spent a third of his life in London.

So, we will perform:

• Mass in F major for two treble voices and organ 

(Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei)

• The 3rd Organ Sonata in A minor, called "Sonata Pascale" (Easter Sonata)

(Allegro - Adoration - Finale: Alleluia)

The Liturgy - together with Palm Sunday Procession - will be framed in this way, that the 1st movement of the Organ Sonata will be played as a Prelude; the "Adoration" will sound during the communion, and the final Alleluia will be performed as a Postlude.

The parts of Mass in F Major will be included into the normal course of the Liturgy - instead of the same parts of it sung by parishioners.
Since the Gloria is integral part of Lemmens' Mass, we will perform it exceptionally (we have no Glory to God during the Lent). The rest of musical part - four church hymns - will be traditional, Anglican.

100th Anniversary of the Titanic

The next Sunday we will celebrate the anniversary of Titanic's disaster. It was happend exactly 100 years ago. Even now, as we know, people can be so stupid, that they will make the next "Titanics", will they have "Costa Concordia" name or whatever else.

Because of the closest connections of Titanic with Great Britain and United States, we would like to dedicate the Sunday celebration to memory of all of Titanic's victims.

We will sing the hymns which were performed on the Titanic's board before and during the disaster. Since we know about "Nearer my God, to thee" or "Eternal Father, strong to save", we can make a choice of the tunes: "Melita" for "Eternal Father" and "Horbury" or "Bethany" for "Nearer my God". We don't know exactly, which tune was used by the ship orchestra. Cameron's "Titanic" used the "Bethany", but some actual memories tell us about "Horbury", which also was used by Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944), who composed the excellent piece named "IN MEMORIAM: TITANIC" as a number 1 from the cycle "12 pièces pour grand orgue" op. 10 (published in 1913). The piece is dedicated "to the memory of the Titanic's heroes", and I will play it on the end of Sunday celebration.

Dear members of the Anglican & Episcopal Congregation!

However loud the organ will play, it is not able to break up through the human voice and motion, what we can experience every week at the end of the Mass.

When I just began to play organ for the Congregation, our priest Fr. Robert told me about my responsibilities. One of them was „the postlude after the Communion”. During the time I am organist here, I played for you over 70 different postludes and never played one piece twice. Every one takes from 3 to 5 minutes – the small, but optimal time for focusing the attention.

But if my music is disturbing somebody in his joy about the finish of the celebration, let us discuss, if we really need it.

Although it is a big joy for me to play the organ, I cannot to do it in time when people want to meet, speak, discuss, going through the church and so on. For all these activities the silence is required. Let’s decide about new scope of silence during the Sunday celebrations – and I will respect it strongly.

Early music concert in Warsaw

On Sunday our church will host a concert played by "Wrocławscy Kameraliści" (Wrocław Chamber Players), who will perform Opera Omnia (all survived today music works) by Nicolaus Radomiensis.

Nicolaus Radomiensis (Mikołaj z Radomia) was one of greatest composers of late Medieval in Poland. His music is a bit archaic, but the excellent interpretation will provide many satisfactions to every early-music lover.

Nigeria Independence Day - Dzień Niepodległości Nigerii - День Независимости Нигерии

Nigeria yesterday celebrated Independence Day. One of our priests, Felix Malizu, belongs to the Church of Nigeria, as well as some of our Believers are Nigerians too. So, today's Mass was celebrated for the intention of the Independence Day of Nigeria. At the start of worship I played the national anthem of Nigeria - "Arise Oh Compatriots, Nigeria's Call Obey".




Wczoraj Nigeria obchodziła Dzień Niepodległości. Jako że jeden z księży Kapelanii anglikańskiej, Felix Malizu, należy do Kościoła Nigerii, będącego z anglikanami w interkomunii, oraz ze względu na nigeryjską reprezentację wśród wiernych Kapelanii, dzisiejsza Msza odprawiona została w intencji Dnia Niepodległości tego kraju. Na rozpoczęcie nabożeństwa zagrałem hymn narodowy Nigerii ("Powstańcie, patrioci, usłyszcie wezwania Nigerii").

Вчера Федеративная Республика Нигерия отмечала свой День Независимости. Так как один из наших священников - Феликс Мализу - принадлежит к Церкви Нигерии (состоящей с англиканами в евхаристическом общении), а так же благодаря представителям Нигерии среди наших прихожан, сегодняшняя Месса была совершена с мыслью о Дне Независимости этого государства. Мессу предварил государственный гимн Нигерии ("Вставайте, патриоты, услышьте призыв Нигерии"), сыгранный мною на органе.

10th Anniversary of WTC attack

On Sunday, we celebrate a sad anniversary - the attack on the World Trade Center, when 2749 people were killed. Therefore, our service will be full of reflections. At the end I'll play the famous "Albinoni's Adagio" composed by Italian composer Remo Giazotto (1910-1998). Other organ pieces will be keeped in a sad, meditative character.

Uprzejmie przypominam, iż w okresie wakacyjnym (1 lipca - 30 października) msze rzymskokatolickie w naszym kościele odbywają się jedynie o godzinie 9.00 w niedzielę. W związku z tym kościół można zwiedzać jedynie w niedziele, kiedy jest on otwarty (8.40-11.40, z wyjątkiem godzin liturgicznych). Być może, w wybrane niedziele (patrz
rozkład ogólny) można zwiedzić kościół po południu w czasie mszy ormiańskich i litewskich, lecz nie mam z tymi grupami kontaktu i nie wiem, czy ich nabożeństwa latem się odbywają.

Currently, till end of September, the number of Roman Catholic masses is reduced: we have only the Mass celebrated on Sunday at 9 am. So, the possibility of visits in our church is limited too: it's possible only when it's open (Sunday 8.40-11.40, excepting exact time of the celebrations).

Дорогие друзья, с начала июля до конца сентября римскокатолические мессы в нашем костёле проходят только по воскресениям, в 9 часов утра. В связи с этим, возможность посещения нашего храма ныне ограничена: его можно осмотреть только по воскресениям с 8.40 до 11.40, когда он открыт, за исключением собственно времени, когда совершается Литургия. Впрочем, во время англиканской литургии (10.30-11.40) мы всех любезно приглашаем независимо от того, хотите Вы чинно присутствовать на всей мессе или только на каком-то её фрагменте. W kolejną niedzielę, 1 maja, odbędzie się pełna już forma liturgii, z Kyrie i Gloria, które tradycyjnie były pomijane w czasie postu. Jeżeli chodzi o muzykę organową, to na wejście zaimprowizuję preludium na temat "Zwycięzca śmierci, piekła i szatana", na Komunię zabrzmi Intermezzo z opery "Cavalleria Rusticana" Pietra Mascagniego, na koniec - preludium "Wesoły nam dzień dziś nastał" Stanisława Moniuszki. Myślę, że radosny ładunek polskich pieśni kościelnych doskonale nadaje się do wykonania w kościele dowolnego wyznania - a zatem nasi parafianie nie będą mieli nic przeciwko.

About organ music: 

For the beginning (10.25) I will improvise an Easter Prelude based on famous Polish tune "Winner of death, hell and the devil". The tune is known from 18th Century and was used by many of Polish composers in theirs works (for example, Feliks Nowowiejski). 

On the Communion I will play famous "Intermezzo" from the "Cavalleria Rusticana", an opera by Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945). This music, originally for organ, harp and strings, sounds, when action happens in church, but now lives with its own life, thanks to Karajan, Muti and others. 

On the end I will prepare short, but striking Prelude by Stanisław Moniuszko (1819-1872) "Happy day has come for us today", based on the same tune, known in different metrical/rhytmical versions since 16th Century (one of most ancient Polish tunes). Moniuszko was "the Father of Polish National Opera" and took after Karol Kurpiński the leadership in Warsaw Theatre, but first of all he was great organist and composer of church music (he was an organist of St. Johns University Church in Vilnius till many years). His organ pieces (1840) are initiated Polish organ work/production after its longest break, when never was composed after ca. 1680! So, Moniuszko was not only the opera's "father", but of modern Polish organ music too. 

 

  

Wielki Piątek - Good Friday - Страстная Пятница в Варшаве

Jutro, w Wielki Piątek, o godzinie 13.45 w naszym kościele odbędzie się nabożeństwo wielkopiątkowe (anglikańskie), połączone z czytaniami, medytacją i muzyką. Będziemy rozpamiętywać śmierć Zbawcy na krzyżu, która, jak wiadomo, nastąpiła ok. godziny 15. Nabożeństwo nasze skończy się więc o tej godzinie.
Układ nabożeństwa i czytań nawiązuje do katolickiej Drogi Krzyżowej. Po każdym czytaniu nastąpi chwila zadumy z muzyką organową w tle.
Zabrzmią pasyjne utwory organowe, m.in. Stanisława Moniuszki, Feliksa Nowowiejskiego, Waleriana Gniota, Idziego Ogiermana Mańskiego oraz Jana Sebastiana Bacha.
Nabożeństwo odprawi ks. Philip Biggs w języku angielskim.
Myślę, że połączenie obrządku anglikańskiego i języka angielskiego z przeważnie polską muzyką organową tradycji katolickiej jest ciekawym i poniekąd uniwersalizującym zestawieniem, gdyż i cel, dla którego się zgromadzimy, jest ponadnarodowy i ponadwyznaniowy.

Music and Readings for Good Friday in Warsaw

Welcome tomorrow to our church - the Anglican Good Friday's Service will start at 1.45 pm and finish at 3 pm (the hour of the Saviour's Death).

During the service various readings according to Christ's Death will take place, as well as meditations in silence and meditations with organ music. The service will be celebrated by The Reverend Philip Biggs.

During the ceremony I will play some of Passion organ music composed by such composers as Stanisław Moniuszko, Feliks Nowowiejski, Walerian Gniot, Idzi Ogierman Mański or Johann Sebastian Bach.

Богослужение Великой Пятницы в Варшаве

Приглашаем всех желающих в нашу церковь завтра, в Страстную Пятницу, в 13.45, на страстное богослужение по англиканскому обряду (на английском языке), которое проведёт о. Филип Биггс.
Англиканское страстное богослужение ведёт корнями к католическому богослужению Крёстного Пути. Каждому из элементов Крёстного Пути Искупителя посвящено чтение соответствующих фрагментов Священного Писания, после которых наступает момент раздумья в тишине или под соответствующую органную музыку. Богослужение заканчивается ровно в 15 часов, когда, согласно Писанию, Христос умер на кресте.
Во время богослужения прозвучат органные произведения страстной тематики - пьесы Станислава Монюшко, Феликса Нововейского, Валериана Гнёта, Идзи Огермана Маньского, Иоганна Себастиана Баха и других. Сочетание в большей части польской органной музыки (католической традиции) с англиканским обрядом должно подчеркнуть над-национальность, над-обрядовость события, которому наше богослужение будет посвящено.

Zwiedzanie - Visiting - Посещение

Kościół można zwiedzać każdego dnia bezpośrednio przed i po Mszy św. o godz. 9 oraz - w wybrane dni - również w godzinach wieczornych, przed mszami lub spotkaniami modlitewnymi poszczególnych grup liturgicznych. W niedzielę kościół można zwiedzać w godzinach 9.45-10.30 i - w wybrane niedziele - w godzinach popołudniowych. W pozostałych godzinach kościół jest zamknięty.


The church can be visited every day half an hour before the Mass (see Shedule). On Sunday you can visit us between the Catholic and Anglican Masses (9.45-10.30). Most of the time the church is closed.


Костёл доступен для посещений ежедневно за полчаса до начала и после окончания мессы; дополнительно в воскресение между католической и англиканской мессами (9:45-10.30) и после англиканской мессы (примерно с 11.30 до 12.00). В остальное время костёл закрыт. В некоторые дни недели (см. общее расписание) можно посетить костёл также в пополуденные часы, в зависимости от того, намечены ли встречи разных молитвенных групп или нет.
Непосредственно во время богослужения туристические посещения костёла нежелательны.

Ubogi jest rzeczą świętą.


Jest to półoficjalna nazwa towarzysząca kościołowi, który znajduje się przy Krakowskim Przedmieściu 62 w Warszawie.
Użytkują ten kościół wierni różnych wyznań i różnych narodowości: katolicy i anglikanie, Polacy, Anglicy, Amerykanie, Litwini, Ormianie i inni.


Jestem organistą tego kościoła, a przynajmniej jego części anglikańskiej – Kościoła Emmanuela.


Chciałbym przybliżyć zainteresowanym ten piękny, lecz mało znany nawet wśród warszawiaków kościół tak od strony wizualnej i historycznej, jak i od strony wydarzeń bieżących. Jeżeli ktoś zapragnie odwiedzić kościółek, zainteresowany jego opisem na tym blogu, uznam, że mój cel został osiągnięty.

The "Res Sacra Miser" Church (what's mean "Poor person is sacred") is a small church in the centre of Warsaw, Poland. Located at the historical centre of city (62, Krakowskie Przedmieście Str.), it is used by many nationalities and denominations: Poles, Englishmen, Americans, Lithuanians, Armenians, Catholics, Anglicans and others.


Since I am the organist of anglican Emmanuel Church located there, I would like to introduce some informations of this church: pictures, history, actualities, news etc.

"Убогий есть святостью" – гласит полуофициальное название костёла, расположенного в историческом центре Варшавы, на улице Краковское Предместье 62.
Почти неповреждённую во время Варшавского Восстания церковь посещают представители разных национальностей и разных конфессий, которые молятся там под одной крышей: поляки, англичане, американцы, литовцы, армяне, католики, англикане.
Так как я являюсь органистом англиканской церкви Эммануэля, расположенной там, я хотел бы представить всем заинтересованным фотографии нашего костёла, его историю и текущую деятельность. Если благодаря этому у кого-то возникнет желание посетить нашу церковь – моя цель будет достигнута.
